The Citadel- Muhammad Ali Mosque

Introduction:
The Muhammad Ali Mosque located in Citadel, is not one of the most historic mosques in Egypt; in fact it’s the most popular Islamic mosque. The Mosque its very known because is where the tomb of Muhammad Ali is and also because of its fine material from Beni Suef. The Mosque, is the largest structure building during the first half of the 19th century.

Ottoman Dynasty:
Pressured out of their homes in the Asian steppes by the Mongols, the Turkish nomadic tribes converted to Islam during the eighth and ninth centuries. The Ottoman Dynasty or the Imperial House of Osman ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1299 to 1922. The Ottoman Dynasty is known in Turkish as Osmanli, meaning “House of Osman”. The Ottoman Empire was centered in present day Turkey, and extended its influence into southern Europe as well as the Middle East.

About the Mosque:
· The mosque was designed by a Greek architecture Yussef Bushnaq.

· Yussef Bushnaq he had come over from Istanbul to build this great mosque for Muhammad Ali.

· He based his plans on the Suitan Ahmad Mosque in Istanbul.

· The work continued ceaselessly until the death of Mohammad Ali 1849 and they had to finish during the reign of his successors.

· The mosque is the Tomb of Mohammad Ali and is also known from its fine material from Beni Suef.

· The mosque in the Citadel was begun in 1830 and finished in 1857.

· It was in the Ottoman Style by Mohammad Ali pasha, rule of Egypt and founder of the country’s last dynasty of Khedives and Kings.


· The Mosque is divided into two sections: The Eastern

Section, which is the main section, called “ Beit al Salah” or “ House of Prayers”.

· The other section is the Western Section, which is called “ Sahn” or “Courtyard”.

· The mosque is a two slender 270-foot minaret. The visitors can have a clear view across the city of the Pyramids of Giza. There’s also a vast prayer hall with an Ottoman style dome, which is 170 feet above, which is in the Courtyard.
